Social Media and Confidence

Social media; our digital world, which we cannot give up today and where we are in constant interaction. Let’s admit that it has an important place in our social life as well, it is a channel that we cannot ignore. So, can we be sure that everything we encounter on social media is true? Sometimes, images manipulated with photoshop, “as if” lives, the illusion of “perfect life” and the effect of this on us “why is my life not like this?” How does encountering such questions affect us and our self-confidence?

At every step that we leave from naturalness, we also distance ourselves from ourselves. As a result, we turn into insecure and unhappy individuals because we cannot be ourselves. Most of the content that affects us on social media actually consists of content that we can witness only the flash of a firework, like the moment of explosion, and that will seemingly mislead us. We must bear in mind that only an embellished version of the good moments is presented here.

We are under the influence of social media in almost every decision we make. How accurate would it be to say that we are free then? Because “The free person is one conscious of the necessities that compel us all.” says Spinoza, and adds to guide; “But if I could understand, I would have changed my mind too and then my life…” But social media, no different from a masquerade ball, has turned into a cyberbullying paradise. Bad, ugly, or unrealistic comments that are unclear who said it make you feel worthless and different from who you are – good or bad. This triggers our primitive “fight or flight” instinct. As a result, we either move away from these channels completely, or hide ourselves with various filters instead of being natural, and take things one step further and enter the race to be perfect, which will only consume us, but which will never end. Yes, it will only consume us. So much so that while the number of likes determines how our day will go, the number of our followers is an indicator of our authority and self-confidence. When we look at the most well-known people in this race and their lives, the burnout syndrome, the fact that they take psychological drugs and aids, become insensitive to the environment, and worst of all, experience a state of emotional emptiness in their social lives, no matter how far we escape from the mirrors of the truth, one day, with words such as “I am worthless and I do not deserve to be loved”. It indicates that we will stay alone and suffer from similar problems.

We should love ourselves and adopt a naturalist attitude by moving away from creating content that presents such illusions and from content producers who maintain this culture, that is, returning to our essence. We must be at peace with ourselves. Because our most beautiful state is our most natural state.
